DEADLINE for posters OCTOBER 30.  Posters can be deposited in campus drop boxes (locations listed at www.yale.edu/wff), sent via email to wff@yale.edu, or delivered to our offices at 305 Crown Street.

CASPY (Chinese Adopted Siblings Program for Youth)

Interested in being a big sib for CASPY? Email us at caspy@yale.edu!

CASPY (Chinese Adopted Siblings Program for Youth) addresses post-adoption issues facing American families that have recently adopted children from China. CASPY is on November 11th this semester (note that the date has changed since the last email), and it will be a day-long event that includes free lunch, icebreakers, cultural workshops, games (fashioned after the Taiwanese nightmarkets), and a final performance/little sib talent show.

Being a big sib is the "cool thing to do"! Each adopted child is paired with a Chinese/Chinese American or Taiwanese/Taiwanese American Yalie to create a sibling relationship, and you go through the workshops and games together. The little kids really love it! To be a big sib, all you'll have to do is attend a Big Sib Info Meeting about 1 week before CASPY, get in touch with you little sib beforehand by calling him/her, and then show up the day of CASPY at around 10:00 am to meet your little sib! CASPY ends at around 4:30 pm. Please email us at caspy@yale.edu if you're interested in being a big sib.

Director/Screenwriter Ngo Quang Hai
And actress Do Thi Hai Yen

The Story of Pao / Chuyen Cua Pao
Winner of Golden Kite Awards for Best Film, Best Actress,
Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography

Premiering at the Montreal World Film Festival in August 2006, Vietnam director Ngo Quang Hai's first feature, 'Pao's Story' (Chuyen Cua Pao) was submitted as Vietnam's official selection.  The movie is the story of Pao, a young ethnic Hmong woman who sets off to find her mother.  The story develops the concept of love from different points of view, both traditional and modern, and seeks to share an intimate look at Vietnam and the Hmong people.  The magnificent mountain ranges of Northwest Vietnam, engulfed year-round in an immense veil of fog, provide a rich cinematic setting for this vivid and moving film.

The movie stars acclaimed Vietnamese actress, Do Thi Hai Yen, known for her roles in "The Quiet American" (US), "Vertical Ray of the Sun" (France), and  "Song of the Stork" (Singapore) among other films.  Prior to the debut of "Pao's Story," director and screenwriter, Ngo Quang Hai collaborated in "The Quiet American," "Vertical Ray of the Sun," "The Scent of Green Papaya," and "Cyclo."

"......'Pao's Story' is a contemplative....coming-of-age tale set among the Hmong people, an ethnic minority indigenous to the mountains of North Vietnam.... told through the eyes of ( Pao, played by) serenely beautiful Do Thi Hai Yen, star of "The Quiet American" and writer/director Ngo's wife....magnificent scenery, colorful costumes and authentically exotic players.....a universal story about letting go of resentments based on childhood memories, as multiple revelations alter her perception of the past..... widescreen vistas and graceful rhythms of a timeless rural existence, shepherded by an especially beautiful woman.....(Ronnie Sheib, Variety.com)

Vietnamese dialogue (with English subtitles).  Running time: 97 min.

Study Abroad in Vietnam!

CET’s Vietnam Immersion program in Ho Chi Minh
THIS SPRING

What is Vietnam Immersion?

CET’s Vietnam Immersion is the first program of its kind in Vietnam. It operates in the fall, spring and summer terms, and offers a unique combination of service learning, area studies courses, intensive Vietnamese language and immersion in contemporary Vietnamese society. In addition, CET's Vietnam Immersion is the first US-sponsored program to offer American students the opportunity to live with Vietnamese roommates. This allows our students to immerse themselves in Vietnamese culture and interact with their Vietnamese peers in ways that were previously impossible. As a student in CET's Vietnam Immersion, you would have the opportunity to participate in community service and/or service learning projects, do an independent study, participate in a Traveling Seminar trip through Central Vietnam and engage in a variety of extra-curricular activities.

You can apply on-line through our website or by downloading an application. Please visit www.cetacademicprograms.com . CET operates on rolling admissions and our application deadline for the spring term for Vietnam has been extended to November 15! Apply now for spring!  The deadline for the summer term is on March 1st.

Other questions?

If you have questions about CET's application/application process or other general program-related questions, email asteckler@academic-travel.com or 800-225-4262 ext. 7319.
