FRESHMEN are ENCOURAGED to APPLY!!
Student Liaisons for 2007 World Fellows
Each of the 2007 World Fellows will be matched with at least two undergraduate student liaisons from their assigned residential college. Student liaisons act as guides for the World Fellows and are vital to World Fellows assimilation into all aspects of residential college and campus life.
Applicants for the Student Liaison positions should have a strong interest in international affairs and a good understanding of their residential college. Having the time to commit to the position from late-August through early-December 2007 is critical.
Please encourage your students who are interested in applying to be a Student Liaison to visit www.yale.edu/worldfellows to download the 2007 World Fellows Program Student Liaison Application. The deadline to submit the completed application, along with a current résumé, is Thursday, April 5, and should be emailed to anita.sharif@yale.edu with the subject line "Student Liaison Application."
The World Fellows find the interaction enriching as well: presenting their work at Master's Teas, enjoying dinners with students at their assigned college, preparing a semester-long Lecture Series aimed at undergraduates, and speaking at talks hosted by a variety of student organizations throughout the campus.
The 2007 World Fellows Program will run from August through December 2007. During that time, student liaisons will work to create opportunities for their World Fellow to become involved in the life of the University, including:
• Promotion of World Fellows Night (undergrad kick-off event);
• Attendance at weekly World Fellows Thursday Lecture Series;
• Twice monthly College dinners with World Fellow & open to members of residential college;
• Organization of Master's Tea for World Fellow; and
• Invitations to World Fellow to address student groups on campus.
We are also soliciting applications for Head Liaison for the 2007 class (usually an alumnus of the previous year's student liaison class); students may also find the application on the website. Please don’t hesitate to email me or call me with any questions at 436-8575.
Thank you,

A Talk with Professor Karen Suyemoto

Asian American students are frequently seen as the "model minority." But research in psychology and education suggests that this may not be the case when seen holistically. Indeed, Asian American students experience depression, anxiety, low self-esteem; are more isolated and socially excluded; and experience racism and discrimination. How do Asian American Studies courses help Asian American students with these and other challenges that are affecting their educational engagement and mental health? And what are the impacts of these courses for students who are not Asian American?
Karen Suyemoto is a clinical psychologist and is currently an Assistant Professor in clinical psychology and Asian American Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Her general interests in teaching, research, and consultation focus on cultural diversity and anti-racist practice. Her current research interests are in ethnic and racial identities in multiracial and Asian American individuals, and in the intersections of psychological and educational experiences for Asian American urban college students. She is currently serving on the Board of Director of the Asian American Psychological Association (AAPA)and is a past co-chair of the AAPA Division on Women

Call for Submissions: anthology on interracial relationships
Beyond Black and White: Interracial Love in a Nuanced World
PITCH DEADLINE: March 15, 2007
Editors Jennifer Gandin Le and Courtney E. Martin seek first-person stories for an upcoming anthology written
by people who have experienced an interracial
relationship.
Beyond Black and White will feature 3,000-word essays from writers around
the world, reflecting a wide spectrum of ethnicities,
geographic locations, and sexual orientations. We want
to hear from men and women in any stage of a
relationship: dating, partnered/married, parenting, or
divorced/formerly dating. We especially want stories
that push beyond the media obsession with black and
white and offer a more nuanced, contemporary
perspective.
Each essay will evoke the single, unique moment when
being in an interracial relationship suddenly mattered
on some level. It may have come before the
relationship began, or after it was over. It may be
hilarious or poignant, irreverent or profound.
FOR YOUR PITCH, please include:
*Your name
*Age
*Your geographic location
*E-mail address or phone number
*Ethnic background of you and your partner (past or
current)
*Two or three short paragraphs about your essay. Bring
your story to life for us, with vivid
characterization, plot, and surprising real-life
details.
We'll consider previously published material if you
own the reprint rights. E-mail us the full piece, and
please tell us where and when it was published.
