STEP’s web-like structure links university administration with student energy and creativity and brings together people with a variety of experiences and perspectives. The program employs twenty-four STEP Coordinators, two Student Directors, one Program Director, one Freshman Taskforce Director and recruits volunteers to the Freshman Taskforce.

STEP relies on the strength and organization of the Residential College System and the non-formal communication network of peer-to-peer interaction to make the concept of sustainability an integral part of a Yale education and sustainable living a natural way of student life.

ACEM
STEP is made possible by a 2004 grant from the Advisory Committee on Environmental Management (ACEM), a committee of faculty, staff, and students that provides advice to the Provost and to the Vice President for Finance and Administration regarding environmentally related activities at Yale. ACEM is the administrative body for the Yale Green Fund, a $1 million dollar fund established in 2001 to provide financial resources to students, staff, faculty, and other Yale individuals or groups for activities and projects that will improve Yale's environmental management and performance.

STEP Coordinators

A STEP Coordinator is the foundation of STEP. A coordinator's role is pivotal to the success of STEP because each coordinator is able to communicate the ideas of the undergraduate community to STEP as well as convey the ideas of STEP to undergraduates, graduates, and the Yale administration. In the process, coordinators have the power to influence and enforce policies and initiatives that promote sustainability. As student leaders at Yale and future leaders of society, coordinators have the opportunity and responsibility to be motivators of change and models of sustainable behavior.

Qualifications
Sophomores or Juniors committed to engaging peers in every day sustainable habits. Candidates must live on campus in the college they wish to represent; exude a creative and sociable personality; and be a self-motivator and natural leader able to work well as a team member.

Roles and Responsibilities
A STEP Coordinator is the sustainability educator in his/her college. In order to succeed as an educator, each coordinator must be a well-versed source of information for all regarding sustainability. Making oneself readily available to answer questions, provide solutions and effectively communicating ideas are cornerstones of the STEP job. In addition, coordinators must also be models of sustainable behavior. With these attributes coordinators will be well prepared to meet the challenge of fostering a community ethic of environmental stewardship and a norm of sustainable living.

Time commitment: 5 hours/week for two semesters. Able to attend weekly meetings; establish working relationships with facilities, masters, dining hall managers, fellow STEP coordinators, STEP Student directors, STEP Program Director and mentor respective college freshman taskforce volunteers. Initiate, organize, and carry-out individual projects and/or group projects and campus wide events. Prepare a formal end-of-semester report to create institutional memory for future STEP Coordinators.

*Applications for the STEP Coordinator Position are available at the end of the Spring Semester. Contact maren.haus@yale.edu for more information and to be put on the application list.
