An Initiative From:

Rogers School District

The long-term vision of Rogers Public Schools 21C program embraces the belief that creating nurturing and rigorous learning environments, which empower home, school, and community in the service of children birth to age ten will ensure learning for all.

In order to accomplish this vision, it is our intent to make a constellation of services available to all families. These services include a model for school-based preschool, before/after-school care, and family support services designed to promote the optimal growth and development of children including home-based preschool through the Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY), and school based pre-k programs.

The Rogers School of the 21st Century

Core Components includes:

- Guidance and support for new parents: Using such models as HIPPY, this family outreach component educates parents of preschool children in early cognitive, social, linguistic and motor development and provides regular opportunities for parents to meet and learn about child development. HIPPY is for parents with preschool children offering personalized home visits, group meetings, periodic developmental, hearing, and vision screenings, and a network of resources to give preschoolers the best possible start toward future success in school.

HIPPY (in its 20th year) is for parents of four and five year old children. Using a developmentally appropriate curriculum home-based educators work directly with parents in their homes and at parent group meetings showing them how to use the HIPPY curriculum with their young child to develop skills including: language development and verbal expression; auditory & visual discrimination; logical thinking and problem solving; pre-mathematical and spatial relations; memory; self-concept and creativity; gross and fine motor development; and eye-hand coordination.

- Preschool programs: Providing high-quality, developmentally appropriate, center-based, full-day programs for four year old children at seven elementary schools and one pre-k center with six additional classrooms, laying the groundwork for positive interactions between schools and families and children’s later success in school.

- Before-school and after-school programs for school-age children: All elementary schools provide diverse, supervised activities for children ages 5 – 10. These programs enable children to learn, grow, and socialize in a safe environment during non-school hours while parents are working, going to school, or otherwise engaged.

- Health education and services: In collaboration with community-based health care providers, the program offers the following services including: health and nutrition education, developmental assessments, dental assessments, immunizations, and preschool and kindergarten physicals.

- Information and referral services: Our 21C program informs families about community options for childcare as well as the criteria for high-quality care. It also provides information about health care and other community services pertaining to the well being of children and families.
