An Initiative From:

Emmet Campus/Blevins School District

Emmet Pre-Kindergarten began in the fall of 2002 with the enrollment of thirteen students. That fall, we received a 21C grant that allowed us to open a second pre-k classroom. Teachers in both classrooms were state-certified.

The 21C program has been very successful in our school district. Our goal is that every child entering Emmet kindergarten is ready to learn. The kindergarten teachers report that the goal was reached last year. Children who attended the pre-k program have mastered a number of skills. They know the school routine and have stronger pre-reading and pre-math skills than students in former years.

Grant money was also used to begin monthly parenting meetings to help parents work at home with their pre-k children. Parent meetings emphasize the family role in education and the effectiveness of our school. Parent meetings bring in speakers from the community that are experts in health, nutrition, early childhood education, and family services.

We plan to sustain this program. We feel that the four-year old program will help us meet the challenge of ‘No Child Left Behind.”
