Ashdown School District

The Ashdown school district serves 1600 students in grades Pre-K through 12th, and covers 325 square miles. The six campuses are: Ashdown High School, Ashdown Jr. High School, L.F. Henderson Intermediate School, C.D. Franks Elementary School, Margaret Daniel Primary School, and the New Traditions School. Families of the district are served by the Family Resource Center located in the center of town at 460 NW Front Street.

The Ashdown community embraces a spirit of collaboration between business, social services, industry, and community volunteers to assure that Ashdown’s children are better prepared emotionally, socially, and academically for a successful school experience. Ashdown Schools’ 21st Century Preschool Program capitalizes on the collaborative strength of the town to provide services to preschool children transitioning to kindergarten.

Community children, ages birth to three, have the opportunity to participate in a Parents As Teachers program provided by a grant from the Arkansas Children’s Trust Fund. Other educational options available at 3 and 4 years of age are H.I.P.P.Y or Headstart (both funded by Southwest Arkansas Development Council), ABC Preschool, or a private preschool program. Families having difficulties benefit from the referral services of the Families in Transition program to help them stabilize their home situations and provided needed school supplies to those meeting the Homeless guidelines.

Along with the previously mentioned programs, children attending any of Ashdown’s 8 daycares have the opportunity to be served by the 21C program. The program provides:
- monthly reading programs at the local library
- bi-monthly Big Book Traveling Library, complete with puppets and props
- Adventure Tours to local places
- monthly daycare staff development
- story time in daycares to model development of a literacy lesson
- the opportunity to participate in a community wide musical

Monthly mail-out packets complete the preschool offerings to 3 and 4 year olds who do not attend a preschool or daycare. The packages contain parenting information, Arkansas Kindergarten Readiness Standards activities, a calendar of events, and other materials of interest to families.
