The Edward Zigler Center for Child Development and Social Policy is working to promote the School of the 21st Century as a state and regional model. While it is important to continue to develop the program in individual schools and districts, the 21st Century concept will have its greatest impact on improving the lives of children and families if it is also developed as a systemic, coherent state-initiated model of school reform.

The School of the 21st Century (21C) program has grown steadily since it was first implemented in 1988 as more and more schools have responded to families’ needs for high quality child care and other support services. With technical assistance and training from the Zigler Center, 21C has been implemented in over 1300 schools in more than 20 states.
